CDDIS Bulletin - October 1998
Volume 14 No. 1

In this issue:

About the cover: The map on the cover of this issue of the CDDIS Bulletin shows the network of GLONASS receivers proposed to participate in the IGEX-98 campaign. Over seventy receivers were proposed to participate; as of October 1, seven sites are submitting data routinely to the IGEX data centers.

IGS Network Systems Workshop

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, through the Crustal Dynamics Data Information (CDDIS), an IGS Global Data Center, in conjunction with the IGS Central Bureau, will host the IGS Network Systems Workshop for three and one half days on November 2-5, 1998 in Annapolis, MD. The goals of this workshop include:

  • developing a closer community within the IGS infrastructure
  • strengthening communications within this community
  • improving the performance of the network
  • developing a shared vision of the future network
  • preparing a proceedings targeted along the lines of an "IGS Network Operations Plan" that would document the network operations of the IGS and future plans

The IGS has been an operational service for nearly five years, providing GPS data and products from a globally distributed network of high precision GPS receivers. Since its inception, the IGS has not sponsored a workshop of this type, focusing on the network and infrastructure issues and how future plans for the IGS affect these components. This workshop will provide a venue for the various network components of the IGS to meet and discuss our current configurations, problems and their resolutions, how to incorporate the many future requirements into our existing infrastructure, and what new technologies are available that we should take advantage of.

A web site has been developed to provide the latest information about the IGS Network Systems Workshop. This site also provides registration and hotel information. The URL for the workshop web site is: http://cddisa.gsfc.nasa.gov/igs_netws/netws_home.html.

GLONASS Data and Products Available through the CDDIS

The CDDIS has recently been selected as a Global Data Center to support the 1998 International GLONASS Experiment (IGEX-98). This international campaign, which will operate from October 19, 1998 through January 20, 1999, is sponsored by:

  • the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) Commission VIII, International Coordination of Space Techniques for Geodesy and Geodynamics (CSTG)
  • the International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS),
  • the Institute of Navigation (ION), and
  • the International Earth Rotation Service (IERS)

The main purpose of IGEX-98 is to conduct the first global GLONASS observation campaign for geodetic and geodynamics applications and evaluate the results. Daily GLONASS data files will be available through the data centers as well as products generated from these data. Available data include GLONASS observation files, GPS and GLONASS navigation files, meteorological data (where available), summary files, all in compressed RINEX format. Products include daily and/or weekly precise GLONASS satellite ephemerides and satellite clock information. Table 1 below lists the sites that have supplied data to the CDDIS as of late September 1998.

ILRS Update

Mike Pearlman/CfA, Carey Noll/CDDIS

Elections to complete the governing board for the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) were held during August and September. The ILRS Governing Board has now been appointed/elected and stands as follows:

IERS Representative Bob Schutz
CSTG Representative Gerhard Beutler
Central Bureau Director John Bosworth
Central Bureau Secretary Mike Pearlman
EUROLAS Network Representatives Wolfgang Schlueter
Werner Gurtner
WPLTN Network Representatives Hiroo Kunimori
Yang Fu Min
NASA Network Representatives John Degnan
David Carter
Lunar Representative Peter Shelus
Data Center Representative Wolfgang Seemueller
Analysis Representatives Richard Eanes
Ron Noomen
At-Large Representatives Francois Barlier
John Luck

John Degnan was elected chairman of the ILRS Governing Board during its first meeting, held at the International Laser Ranging Workshop in Germany in September 1998.

Through the labors Van Husson, Carey Noll, Mark Torrence and others the first version of the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) Web Site is now available for review at the URL http://ilrs.gsfc.nasa.gov/ilrs_home.html. The web site is a dynamic entity, in need of user feedback. Comments, suggestions, corrections, etc. should be forwarded to Carey Noll (noll@cddis.gsfc.nasa.gov) and Van Husson (hussonv@thorin.atsc.allied.com).

Users are also asked to ensure their contact information is accurate on the ILRS Web Site; this information can be viewed on the email directory page at URL http://ilrs.gsfc.nasa.gov/ilrsemail.html. Corrections and additions can be sent to Carey Noll. Users who are not ILRS Associates but are interested in ILRS activities and would like to receive ILRS publications and literature, may become ILRS Correspondents. Again, interested users should contact Carey Noll at the email address above.

CDDIS Bulletin, Volume 13 -- Index

Access to GPS Data and Products through the CDDIS

This is a reminder that users of GPS data and products available through the CDDIS should utilize the new computer, cddisa.gsfc.nasa.gov, operational as of June 01, 1998. For more details on this system, users should read the article in the June issue of the CDDIS Bulletin or contact Carey Noll (noll@cddis.gsfc.nasa.gov).

DATA BITS AND BYTES

This section is designed to give brief notices of special events, new data sets, or problems encountered in recent months. The CDDIS staff believes the user community should be informed of these problems in order to ensure that the best results possible are produced from data issued by the archive.

Borowiec Barometer Correction

Stanislaw Schillak/Borowiec Astrogeodynamic Observatory

The Borowiec SLR (station 7811) barometer gave systematic false readings for the period July 21, 1993 through June 30, 1998. The constant difference between the bad and correct values was 3.4+/-0.6 millibars. This difference includes an error of readings as well as the location of the old barometer (about 4 meters below the intersection of the mount axes). A correction of 3.4 millibars should be subtracted from the pressure in the all Borowiec normal point data prior to July 01, 1998. The Borowiec SLR staff regrets any inconvenience this problem has caused the user community.
